The Coromandel is an hour and a half from Auckland and most visitors never go. That is the entire reason this journey exists.
Cathedral Cove runs on the tide rather than the clock, so we go when it is empty rather than when it is convenient.
The last morning is the Karangahake Gorge, which is a railway tunnel, a river and an old gold battery, and almost nobody tells you about it.
The days
-
Day 1
Auckland to Hahei
Over the Kopu bridge and up the coast road. Lunch at Thames. The afternoon is yours on the beach, or a walk out to the pā site if you would rather move.
Tonight, Hahei
-
Day 2
Cathedral Cove and the hot beach
The Cove at the right state of the tide. Hot Water Beach two hours either side of low, with a spade, like everyone else.
Tonight, Hahei
-
Day 3
Karangahake, and home
The gorge in the morning, through the tunnel with a torch. Lunch in Waihi. Back in Auckland mid-afternoon.

Is the Cathedral Cove walk hard?
It is a steady climb out on the way back. Twenty-five minutes at an easy pace, with a bench halfway.
